Volunteers hold responsible and valued positions within the Hospice, its Charity Shops and for Fundraising.  By the very nature of the environment, the selection process is approached in line with the screening for employed staff. This includes a formal application, references, interview and where appropriate, the relevant level of disclosure with the Criminal Records Bureau.

This year celebrated our volunteers during Volunteers' Week. To help us say thank you for the incredible work they do, we were supported by 26 local coffee shops to offer all volunteers a 'Thank you Brew.' Volunteers receive clarity about their role, are given 'hands on' support, supervision and have the opportunity to further develop their skills. Furthermore, experienced volunteers play a pivotal role as 'Mentor' under whose guidance new recruits can safely reach a level of ability and understanding.

Crucially, volunteers give their time freely and without compulsion.  It is this that enables the Hospice to become more innovative, effective and efficient in its provision of care within the community, without additional financial burdens.

At St. Michael's Hospice, we are passionate about the inclusion of volunteers in our work and invest time and money into the appropriate training, supervision and support. In return, we offer a sense of belonging, renewed confidence, social support networks and, invariably, new or enhanced skill sets.

By the distinctive nature of volunteers, they can be responsive, flexible and add diversity, while operating alongside staff in a complementary way, engaging in all aspects of our Hospice, Retail and Fundraising work. Without this collaboration, St. Michael's Hospice would be unable to sustain its services or develop the high level of care it offers patients, their families and carers.

In essence, it is volunteers who help maintain the informal atmosphere, empathy and the uniqueness of care, which are the very foundations on which St. Michael's Hospice was built.

St. Michael's Hospice engages volunteers in a wide variety of roles, some of which are patient-focused while others are more behind the scenes, but certainly no less important.

We are currently looking for volunteers to help us with our fundraising events in 2018.  If you are interested, please have a look at this page.
