Volunteer

Our volunteers are crucial to almost every aspect of what we do. Without people generously giving their time and skills, we would be unable to continue delivering vital care and support to our patients and their families. In 2021/22, even with Covid restrictions meaning many volunteers could not return to their roles, they still contributed nearly 50,000 hours of their time, skills and knowledge.

There are so many ways you can get involved as a St. Michael’s Hospice volunteer, whether it is at the Hospice, in the community or in one of our shops.

Volunteers are the absolute heartbeat of St. Michael's

Volunteers are the absolute heartbeat of the Hospice. The work volunteers put in allow the Donation Centre to operate & in turn allows retail to function efficiently & successfully. The effort & commitment shown by the retail van drivers to consistently load & unload full vans of heavy recycling & donations in all weather is remarkable. Thanks very much!!

Marc Redstall - Furniture Store Manager

Volunteering with our retail team

With 11 shops located across North Hampshire including our specialist Furniture Store, we have a wide range of volunteering opportunities available. Our retail volunteers hold a vital role in ensuring the ongoing running of our stores, assisting with tasks including serving customers and sorting donations. Our donation centre is the hub of our retail operation with donations being dropped off and sorted by our team of staff and volunteers. Our van drivers assist by collecting and dropping off our donated goods to our shops across North Hampshire.

Volunteering on the inpatient unit

It was great to get to know the staff and the lovely housekeepers, who were all so kind, and the patients. Listening to their relatives was such a rewarding experience in a place that was full of love, light, and compassion. Words can’t really express what I feel but volunteering at the Hospice makes you feel life is to be lived and the realisation that you can give something back in gratitude for all the blessings you have received

Pauline

Volunteering at the Hospice

At our Hospice in Basingstoke, we offer a number of patient-facing roles that provide assistance to patients, families and staff throughout our inpatient unit.

Please note, due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19, certain Hospice based volunteers (other than those specifically advertised on our volunteer vacancies page) are currently stood down. We are still accepting new applications, with all volunteer roles listed on our application form. Once we have received your application form, our Voluntary Services Manager will get in touch with you directly. Once guidelines confirm that it safe to do so, volunteering will resume.

Volunteers are our representatives in the community

Volunteers are our representatives in the community and go out of the way to support us with collections, distributing collection tins and lots more. They will nominate us for funding in their workplaces, local shops and pubs, or hold a stall at their village fete. Volunteers are also invaluable in helping us in the office with admin and tasks.

As a really new fundraising team, volunteers provide us with a wealth of knowledge, and experience of what has happened at the Hospice in the past and bring us ideas on what we should be looking to do in the future.

Thank you to all our volunteers, no matter what your role. Whether you help us once a year, or every week, we are so grateful to you for donating your time to help us. We simply couldn’t do it without your help!

The fundraising team

Volunteering in the community

Throughout the year we have a calendar of fundraising events for which we often need volunteers to lend a hand. If you are interested in volunteering at any of our upcoming events, please contact our team using the details provided below.

Volunteers are so important, especially to the Fundraising Team.

We couldn’t put on our events without our dedicated volunteers who will get up super early or stay until late to help us. Whether manning the car park, serving refreshments, or handing out medals they always do it with a huge smile on their faces.
