Bringing donations for our shops

We can accept items to be sold in our stores and also items which we cannot sell but which we can recycle. Not everything can be sold or recycled so please read below carefully.

Please note that staff reserve the right at any time to refuse donations due to saleability, size, safety, capacity issues.

Furniture

We accept a wide range of household furniture items. We cannot guarantee to take any offered donation until we have inspected the item(s).

We can accept

Furniture that is in a good saleable condition (clean and unbroken) with safety labels still attached. Including but not limited to:

  • sofas, footstools
  • beds and mattresses
  • chest of drawers, wardrobes, dressers, modern dressing tables, bureaus
  • tables, dining suites, benches, dining chairs, stools
  • riser recliner chairs, wheelchairs, mobility scooters
  • sideboards
  • desks, small office furniture, filing cabinets
  • modern small display cabinets
  • bathroom cabinets
  • freestanding cupboards
  • mirrors
  • bookcases
  • wooden tv stands
  • flat screen tv’s
  • lamps with plugs.

We cannot accept

We may refuse potential donations on the grounds of age, style & saleability – not just condition. Items which are dirty, broken or not in good condition will not be accepted

  • gas-operated appliances and goods
  • electrical items that need to be hard-wired (i.e. not needing a 13amp plug)
  • white goods (fridges, freezers etc.)
  • used safety items (car seats, helmets etc.)
  • upholstered products and soft furnishings not displaying current fire retardant certification
  • house clearances
  • prams and pushchairs with less than a 5-point harness
  • pushbikes that are not roadworthy
  • skates, skateboards or roller blades
  • dismantled flat pack furniture
  • cots
  • bunk beds or cabin beds
  • large sideboards / display cabinets
  • some older, dark wood furniture
  • armchairs (that were part of a suite)
  • divan bed bases without mattress
  • electric beds
  • pianos
  • black or clear glass TV stands
  • exercise equipment.

Guidance

Furniture can be brought to our Wade Road location during opening hours or you can arrange to have items picked up. To save yourself a wasted journey, if you are unsure if we can accept your items please call the store or email using the details below and we can provide you with guidance.

Arrange a collection or delivery

Please call the store on 01256 471191 or email furniture@stmichaelshospice.org.uk to arrange a pick up. Items will be collected for free.

If you arranging a pick up from us for a potential donation, or we are delivering an item you have purchased, please be aware that we are now allowed to enter properties assuming no one has COVID or is isolating. Note, we only collect and deliver from/to the ground floor, we are unable to carry items up or downstairs. Thank you.

 

Large Drop-offs

Larger volumes of household donations can be taken to our donation centre during opening hours. We will only accept DVDs and CDs if they are brand new and in original packaging. Please check the lists below for items that we can and cannot accept. Thank you.

We can accept:

  • Books: can be accepted in any condition
  • Bric a Brac: ornaments, tableware, kitchenware and other items for the home. These should be in good, clean condition and in working order (where applicable), not broken or cracked
  • Clothes: clothes should be clean and useable. If they are not in top condition to sell in our shops, we can recycle clean clothes.
  • Electricals: these should be in good working order.
  • Entertainment: Computer games and systems etc. These should be undamaged and in working order.
  • Footwear & Accessories: shoes, bags, belts, scarves, hats, gloves, jewellery etc. These should be in clean useable condition. Shoes, bags, hats and belts can be recycled if we are unable to sell in our shops.
  • Furnishings: linens, curtains, quilt covers etc. These should be in clean condition. Please note we cannot accept duvets, quilts, pillows or sleeping bags unless they are new in original packaging.
  • Miscellaneous: we can also accept many other items such as unwanted gifts, items for arts and crafts, baby items, gadgets etc. Please check that they are in good condition and useable.
  • Safety Items: please note we are unable to accept safety items such as helmets and car seats unless they are new in original packaging.
  • Toys: must be in good condition, not broken and with no missing pieces

We cannot accept:

  • Any items that are dirty, broken or damaged
  • Used printer cartridges
  • Underwear without labels
  • Pillows or duvets unless they are brand new and in original packaging
  • Gas-operated appliances and goods
  • Electrical items that need to be hard-wired (i.e. not needing a 13amp plug)
  • White goods (fridges, freezers etc.)
  • Used safety items (car seats, helmets etc.)
  • Upholstered products and soft furnishings not displaying current fire retardant certification

Please note, the donation centre is located behind our furniture store. Please park in the designated St. Michael’s Hospice bays when dropping off your items.

Small Drop-offs

We can accept:

A small volume of donations at our traditional shops during opening hours. If you have a larger volume of donations, please visit our Donation Centre.

  • Clothes: clothes should be clean and useable. If they are not in top condition to sell in our shops, we can recycle clean clothes.
  • Footwear & Accessories: shoes, bags, belts, scarves, hats, gloves, jewellery etc. These should be in clean useable condition. Shoes, bags, hats and belts can be recycled if we are unable to sell in our shops.
