Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that combines slow and controlled movements with deep breathing and mindfulness. It focuses on posture, balance, and fluid motion, and is an accessible way to exercise for people with different levels of ability.
The sessions are held in the Turner Centre, at St. Michael’s Hospice. These will be formatted in a group setting on Wednesday mornings, 10:30am to 11:30am. This programme is designed and ran by our expert Therapy team.
It is encouraged that you attend each session, however it is not essential.
You will be contacted by a member of the St. Michael’s Hospice Therapy team prior to attending the programme, this is to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Tai Chi can help to improve strength and stamina, supporting patients in a number of ways. It can enhance balance and coordination, helping with stability in everyday activities, while also building muscle strength and improving joint mobility to increase confidence in walking and reduce stiffness. The gentle movements and focus on breathing can support better posture and may be particularly beneficial for patients with chest conditions by helping to improve lung function. Tai Chi also encourages relaxation, aiming to reduce stress and anxiety and improve sleep, while offering a valuable opportunity for social connection in a supportive environment where you can learn something new.
