Recycling

Recycling helps the Hospice and the environment

Retail - recycleThe Hospice shops recycle clothing, bags and footwear. Not all of our donated clothing is in a condition to sell, but we don't bin it. It still can produce revenue for the charity. We also recycle 90kg of cardboard a week, and around 200 ink cartridges and toners a month. This has a direct positive impact on the environment, as more than 25 million litres of fossil fuel are consumed each year in the manufacture of these products, and an estimated 480 million used cartridges and toners go to land-fill.

Retail - BH volunteersWe have now launched a new scheme to recycle mobile phones, which can be dropped off at any of our charity shops to be sent away for component recycling. During 2008 we will be encouraging as many local businesses as possible to donate their old mobiles. This not only gives North Hampshire businesses an opportunity to help the Hospice, it also helps to raise awareness that St. Michael's is dedicated to protecting the environment.

Retail - book shoppingThe future holds many more potential initiatives, and the possibility of recycling books is currently being looked at. We are also looking into schemes to recycle tin cans and carrier bags for Hospice income. If it can be recycled, we will look to recycle it and encourage as many of the general public to take part also.

If you or your employer would like to get involved with any of these schemes please contact Iain Cameron by e-mail at i.cameron@stmichaelshospice.org.uk or at the Hospice on (01256) 844744.
