Medical Team

The Medical team at St. Michael's Hospice consists of the Medical Director and Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Dr. Jane Bywater, Medical Officer Dr. Hugh Freeman and Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Dr. Lara Alloway.  The team is supported by local GP's providing evening and weekend cover.

In addition to seeing patients in the Hospice Dr. Bywater and Dr. Alloway work in the Hospital and the Community. They also see Out-Patients at the Hospice and Hospital, when someone has symptoms that are not controlled or if they want to talk about what is happening with their illness. Some patients will be seen at home if they are not well enough to come to a clinic.

All the Doctors work closely with other healthcare professionals to provide a holistic approach to each person’s care.

New appointment – Medical Director

In 2010 Dr. Jane Bywater was appointed Medical Director of St. Michael’s Hospice. Having worked at the Hospice for four years Jane has proven a major asset to the Hospice team in relation to her very high level of medical skill and enhancing our leading reputation for holistic patient care.  Previously Jane has worked as Medical Director of the Sue Ryder Nettlebed Hospice in Oxfordshire, qualified as a doctor in 1984, and was appointed Consultant in Palliative Medicine in 1994 in Berkshire where she worked for 9 years.  In this new role, Jane will continue to see patients and take the lead responsibility for Clinical Strategy of the Hospice.
